Apple Vision Pro

In February 2024 Apple's Vision Pro went on sale. At $3,499 it was a mixed-reality headset, but Apple refused to call it a "VR headset" or "AR glasses", inventing a phrase instead: spatial computing. Through high-resolution displays, apps stopped being rectangles inside a screen and floated around you in space; interaction needed no controller—you look, pinch, and speak.

Every detail carries Apple's interaction philosophy. Eye tracking selects what you look at, finger pinches replace clicks, and Siri handles the voice entry. Instead of sealing users inside a virtual world like gaming headsets, it emphasizes layering digital content onto real space. In Apple's words, this is the "seamless fusion of digital and physical worlds".

For AI, Vision Pro matters because it turned a set of AI capabilities into interaction infrastructure. Spatial positioning, hand tracking, environment understanding, real-time rendering—all of it rests on computer vision and machine learning. When you "place" a virtual window in your room and it stays stable as you move, a whole stack of spatial-perception technology is at work. It foreshadows the next computing entry point: not a bigger screen, but a device that sees and understands space.

Of course, Vision Pro was also contentious. The price, the weight, and a thin content ecosystem kept it from becoming an iPhone-scale product, and Apple later adjusted its pace. But as an attempt to redefine the form of computing, it pushed the whole industry to ask: when AI is smart enough, what should human-computer interaction look like?

Looking back at the Vision Pro launch, its meaning lies less in units sold than in making spatial computing a purchasable thing for the first time. It showed how far AI-plus-hardware fusion could go, and gave Apple's later AI moves—from Apple Intelligence to on-device smarts—a sharp coordinate: Apple has always believed AI's value must land in tangible, touchable product experience.
